Rights Respecting Schools

Rights Respecting Schools – Carrick Knowe Primary School

We are proud to be a Bronze 'Rights Respecting School’. The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) is based on the principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation.

We work hard to foster an environment where children’s rights are lived, learned and understood.  We are committed to ensuring the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child underpin our school values, are at the heart of our school’s ethos, and culture to improve the well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential.

At Balgreen Primary School we are a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. Young people, and the school community, learn about children’s rights by putting them into practice every day. For example, our whole school values feed into our class charters.  The children identify key values as a class community then select the articles that are most pertinent to the individuals in their class community. They exercise their freedom of expression to discuss which rights to choose.  The language of rights is used throughout the day between children and members of staff to increase awareness and ensure that everyone is safeguarding and promoting them.  Pupils are encouraged to reflect on how their behaviour and actions affect those around them through our Restorative Approaches, which allows us to build and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all, both in the classroom and around the school.  We have been doing this in class, in assemblies and through whole school led initiatives such as our equalities work, celebrations of achievements in and out of school, pupil leadership groups, enterprise and sustainable learning.

We really hope that you will feel able to support us and your child in working towards our goal of being a Gold Rights Respecting School.
